Customs seizes more than half a ton of drugs in 5 months

Drugs disguised as ordinary goods were seized by Quang Tri Customs.

In the first months of the year, the situation of drug crime continued to be complicated. Drug criminals often take advantage of long border lines, complex mountainous terrain, many trails and openings; the openness in trade facilitation policies and related management policies to illegally mix, hide and transport narcotics from abroad into Vietnam.

Drug-related cases handled by Customs authorities via road are mainly concentrated in key areas such as border gates with China, Laos and Cambodia.

The sea route is also assessed as a key area for smuggling of narcotics, precursors containing narcotics, and psychotropic substances without a license from the authorities in the name of business goods.

The air route is a key area where illegal drug trafficking activities take place in Vietnam, mainly through international airports: Noi Bai, Tan Son Nhat, Da Nang with all kinds of synthetic drugs, new drugs containing narcotics, psychotropic substances, and marijuana.

With the initiative and drastic measures in the fight against drug smuggling, in the first five months of the year (from December 16, 2022 to May 15, 2023), Customs presided over and coordinated with other authorities such as the Police and Border Guards to handle 93 cases, arrest 111 suspects; of which, the customs presided over 46 cases.

Seized exhibits are up to 546 kg and 8,624 pills of drugs (up 31% year-on-year) including 0.9 kg of opium; 4.5kg of cannabis; 55.4kg of heroin; 15kg of cocaine; 110kg and 8,400 of ketamine tablets; 43.7kg of methamphetamine; 5.5kg of amphetamine; 311kg and 224 MDMA tablets; and 2.1kg of other drugs.
