Since early August, there was a serious landslide at Deo Dat area on National Highway 8 in Bolykhamchay province (Laos), causing the traffic jam. Although the Lao competent agencies and units have made great effort to overcome this situation, the transportation on National Highway 8 connecting from Boolykhamxay province (Laos) to Cau Treo International Border Gate has not yet resumed completely.
This situation has caused the suspension in customs clearance at Cau Treo International Border Gate. According to the representative of Cau Treo International Border Gate Customs Branch, the volume of goods and vehicles across the border gate has decreased by over 60%. Currently, only about 40 vehicles are cleared on average per day across the border gate while about 150 vehicles were cleared on average per day.
According to Lao competent agencies, traffic on landslide roads is being overcome. However, this time is the rainy season, so construction and traffic remediation face many difficulties. Therefore, it is expected to take 1-2 months for the traffic to resume operation.
Based on information provided by Lao competent agencies and the actual situation, many enterprises have to plan and provide solutions to import goods and raw materials to serve production and business activities in line with the plan.
Some businesses that regularly carry out import procedures across Cau Treo International Border Gate said that goods cleared across the border gate mainly are ores, beverages, agricultural products, and wait for customs clearance. The traffic is stuck, causing difficulties in business and production of many businesses.
At the entry gate of former Cau Treo Economic Zone, a large volume of goods and vehicles are congested, so some vehicles have to carry out customs procedures at Cha Lo Border Gate (Quang Binh province).
A company specializing in importing ore products from Laos said that for more than a month, all procedures and transportation of goods across Cau Treo International Border Gate have not arisen. For signed orders, the company accepted to be at a loss and carry out procedures at Cha Lo Border Gate to to meet the delivery schedule. The company cannot sign new orders because due to the concern of increasing cost.
The backlog of goods at Cau Treo International Border Gate has affected the operation of enterprises and caused difficulties and challenges for the Customs in customs control and management, the represent said.
Although the quantity of goods decreased sharply, the total import and export turnover across Cau Treo Border Gate increased by 18.26% year-on-year to US$ 294.7 million, thereby, remitting about VND 500 billion to the State budget, meeting 98% of the target in 2023.
