Noi Bai Customs seize more than 50 kgs of imported rhino horn

According to initial information, through collection of information in advance for the flights and scanning operations for imported and exported goods, Customs officers of the Customs Branch of Noi Bai International Airport (under the Hanoi Customs Department) and the Police Department of Crime Prevention of Smuggling (C74) – the Ministry of Public Security detected a suspicious red suitcase coated by white nylon with the card number 118344 of about 61kg. This derelict suitcase was transported on flight KQ 870/28 December 16 from Nairobi (Kenya) to Hanoi at 2 pm on 29th December 2016.
After opening this suitcase at 7 pm on the same day, the functional forces found a large amount of rhino horns inside the suitcase. Specifically, the exhibits included 19 pieces of horn. The total weight of the horn was more than 50kg. In which, the heaviest peice was more than 7kg.
According to a Customs officer in an anti-smuggling Team at Noi Bai International Airport, if the amount of horns was transported for consumption in the black market, it would sell for several billion vnd.
The package was sealed to wait for assessment.
The incident is still being investigated and verified.
