Detect five passengers carrying illegal foreign currency worth about VND14 billion at Noi Bai International Airport

The amount of illegally transported foreign currency is estimated at 14 billion VND.

In recent years, the smuggling and illegal transportation of goods, currency and drugs by air has increased. To proactively prevent this situation, the Director General of Vietnam Customs has directed Customs units to take measures to prevent and strictly handle violations.

On June 13, the Anti-smuggling and Investigation Department collaborated with Ha Noi Customs Department to inspect and detect five passengers on flights EK394 and QR976 from Poland transit via DUBAI and DOHA to Noi Bai International Airport, who illegally transported US$352,000 and EUR245,900 (about VND 14 billion).

The case is under investigation.

According to the provisions of Clause 1, Article 2 of Circular No. 15/2011/TT-NHNN dated August 12, 2011, of the State Bank of Vietnam: Individuals carry foreign currency, Vietnamese dong in cash, upon entry into or exit from the country with passport across international border gates of Vietnam, above the following amount will be required to declare to the border Customs:

• USD 5,000 (Five thousand US dollars) or other foreign currencies of the same value;
• VND 15,000,000 (Fifteen million Vietnamese Dong).

Article 3 of Circular No. 15/2011/TT-NHNN stipulates documents being presented to the border Customs by individuals carrying foreign currency and Vietnamese dong upon exit.
