Customs prosecutes seven criminal cases in first quarter

In the first quarter, the General Department of Customs (Ministry of Finance) continued to perform well in its role as the Standing Committee of the National Steering Committee 389 and continuedto direct its units throughout the sector to intensify the struggle against smuggling lines and groups, trade fraud and illegal cross-border transportation of goods.
Along with that, the Customs sector also strengthened inspection, supervision and strict control of origin, labeling and protection of intellectual property rights.
In the first quarter, the whole sector took the lead and coordinated with other agencies to seize and handle 3,617 cases with total value of infringing goods estimated at VND1,010.6 billion.
Notably, the Customs agency prosecuted seven criminal cases and transferred the competent agencies to request to prosecute 25 cases.
Some typical cases:
On March 31, Noi Bai International Airport Customs Branch (Hanoi Customs Department) discovered and seized 729,000 medical masks.
On March 30, the Fleet 3 (the Anti-Smuggling and Investigation Department) discovered and seized a boat carrying 180 m3 of D.O oil without documents atVung Tau sea area.
On March 19, the Fleet 1 (the Anti-Smuggling and Investigation Department) seized over 3 million packs of cigarettes in the Northeast Sea.
For wild animals, on March 2, Can Tho Customs Branch (in Can Tho Customs Department) coordinated with the competent forces to detect a person carrying nearly 29kg of rhino horn on a flight from South Korea to Can Tho.

Regarding drug crimes, on January 25, under the direction of the leaders of the General Department of Customs, the Anti-Smuggling and Investigation Department set up the MT919 case, coordinated with Tay Ninh Customs Department to fight the illegal transportation of drugs from Cambodia to Vietnam via Moc Bai border gate, seizing 13kg of drugs, 1,000 ecstasy pills, and cash worth VND50 million and US$10,500.
