15 kg rhino horn seized at Noi Bai Airport: Police continues to investigate

On 24 April, the leader of NoiBai International Airport (Ha Noi Customs Department) said that after receiving a dossier related to the smuggling of 15 kg of rhino horn, the Investigation Police Department (under Ha Noi Police) has prosecuted and arrested a foreign offender.

On 11 April, Noi Bai International Airport Customs Branch led the Northern Anti-smuggling Enforcement Unit – Unit 1 (under the Anti-smuggling and Investigation of the General Department of Vietnam Customs) to inspect a suspicious package.

This package was transported on aflight from South Africa to Noi Bai airport on 9 April.

The package was wrapped inplastic in a big black bag.

There were lots of cake bags and powdered milk cans in the package, while rhino horns were wrapped in foil to avoid detection.

However, the Customs force detected and seized these rhino horns.

The total weight of the horns was nearly 15 kg.

Rhino horn is prohibited from being tradedunder CITES, however, many smugglers still traffic this item on the black market with the price in billons of VND/ kg

Currently, as per the Criminal Code, the prosecution of cases related to wild animals is assigned to the Police Department.
