Speaking at the meeting, the Deputy Director General, Mr. Nguyen Cong Binh stressed: “Vietnam Customs is very delighted and honored to be the host country for the first time to hold the 2nd meeting of WGIMTS in Vietnam”.

According to the Deputy Director General, Mr. Nguyen Cong Binh, the field of statistics in general and Customs statistics on exports and imports in particular always play an important role in policy formulation and economic management of each country. In the context of international and regional integration, with the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), cooperation to improve the statistics system of the ASEAN Community should be accelerated.

"I believe that in this meeting, through discussion and exchange, experts in statistics of ASEAN countries can gain knowledge and experience from each other, and discuss measures and plans to develop and further improve the quality of statistical system on imported and exported goods, as well as data quality improvement", the Deputy Director General, Mr. Nguyen Cong Binh stated.

The Deputy Director said that in Vietnam, since April 1, 2014, Vietnam Customs has officially been operating Vietnam Automatic Cargo Clearance System (VNACCS/VCIS), thereby facilitating trade and enhancing the quality of statistical data on exported and imported goods.

However, there is a need for discussion and sharing of experiences among the member countries of ASEAN to solve some problems in exchanging statistics. Therefore, this meeting is a very good opportunity.

According to the Department of Information Technology and Customs Statistics (under the Department of Vietnam Customs), the 2nd meeting of the Working Group on International Merchandise Trade Statistics of ASEAN (WGIMTS) from October 11, 2016 to October 14, 2016 in Hanoi mentioned the following: Framework and methods of data transmission; rules of the ASEAN Statistics Community; review and implementation of the plan for the 2017 ASEAN Statistics system on imported and exported goods; and the harmonization process of statistics systems on exported and imported goods among ASEAN countries.
