The suspect and the evidence are arrested at the scene.

According to Quang Tri Customs Department, on June 23, during processing inspection and control procedures for luggage and passengers entering Vietnam from Laos, the Customs Enforcement Team under Lao Bao Border Gate Customs Branch, Quang Tri Customs Department suspected Mr. P.D.H (born in 1965, residing in Trung Dong commune, Truc Ninh district, Nam Dinh province) for hiding a volume of goods without customs declaration.

Lao Bao Border Gate Customs Branch presided over and coordinated with Lao Bao International Border Gate Border Guard Station, Anti-Drug Enforcement Team, Quang Tri Customs Department, and the Anti-Smuggling and Investigation Department (General Department of Vietnam Customs) to conduct an inspection.

As a result of the inspection, the enforcement authorities detected 9 yellow, oval shaped metal pieces inside a brown cloth bag under his pant.

Mr. P.D.H admitted that the 9 pieces of yellow metal were gold mined by him in Laos.

After conducting appraisal at the Department of Forensic Techniques - Ministry of Public Security and assessing the value of infringing goods, the enforcement forces determined that the 9 pieces of yellow metal were gold metal (Au), with the average amount of gold metal (Au) is 93.9%, total volume is 1167.08 grams, and total value is more than VND2.1 billion.

Based on the investigation results and collected evidence, on July 8, the Director of Lao Bao Border Gate Customs Branch issued Decision to prosecute criminal case No. 224/QD-HQLB for “Illegal transportation of goods across the border” at Lao Bao International Border Gate, Lao Bao town, Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province, and transferred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department, Huong Hoa District Police for further investigation.

In early May 2024, the General Department of Vietnam Customs directed provincial and municipal customs departments to strengthen inspection, supervision, control and fight against smuggling and illegal transportation of gold products across the border; and strictly manage gold import and export activities of licensed enterprises.

Following the Prime Minister's direction at the meeting on gold market management solutions and the State Bank's proposal on implementing the Prime Minister's direction in gold market management, the General Department of Vietnam Customs requires local customs departments to carry out customs procedures for gold products imported by the State Bank smoothly, quickly and in accordance with regulations.

The regulator requests the local customs departments to strengthen inspection, supervision, control and fight against smuggling and illegal transportation of gold across borders; strictly manage gold import and export activities of licensed enterprises; closely monitor goods and luggage passing through border gates, and inspect and handle shipments showing signs of violation.
