GDVC’s Director General Nguyen Van Can meets US Customs Attaché

VCN – On July 22, Director General of the General Department of Vietnam Customs (GDVC) Nguyen Van Can had a meeting with the US Customs Attaché to Bangkok Edward Thurmond, at the GDVC’s headquarter.

At the meeting, Director General Nguyen Van Can welcomed and highly appreciated Attaché Edward Thurmond for his work with Vietnam Customs. The GDVC is pleased meet Attaché Edward Thurmond on his first visit to Vietnam as the US Customs Attaché to Southeast Asia.

Direct General Nguyen Van Can thanked Mr. Edward Thurmond for the effective coordination during a working session of the Vietnam Customs delegation at the US Customs in June.

Motivated by the support of Mr. Edward Thurmond, the visit of Vietnam Customs achieved positive results and played a key role in improving and expanding the cooperation relationship between the two customs administrations, said the Director General.

Mr. Edward Thurmond was also pleased to return to Vietnam with the warm welcome of Vietnam Customs.

Director General Nguyen Van Can told Mr. Edward Thurmond about the cooperation results in the visit to US Customs by the Vietnam Customs delegation.

The Director General also said that the working session of Vietnam Customs delegation with the US Customs High Commissioner about the intelligence connection and sharing to prevent customs offences, improving the efficiency of handling crimes related to smuggling, commercial fraud, illicit transshipment and tax evasion, which was highly appreciated by the leaders of the Ministry of Finance. Accordingly, the Ministry of Finance assigned Vietnam Customs to be the leading agency in implementing cooperation initiatives signed by the two customs administrations in the Declaration of Intent.

“I requested operational departments of Vietnam Customs to propose solutions to implement contents agreed by me and the US Customs High Commissioner during the visit, especially the information connection and sharing for law enforcement and trade facilitation of both sides, including the cooperation under the program of electronic data exchange for goods and the program of global target identification" said the Director General.

Motivated by achievements of the working session of Vietnam Customs and the US Customs, Mr. Edward Thurmond believes that effective cooperation in information sharing for law enforcement and trade facilitation of the two customs administrations.

Mr. Edward Thurmond said in the past few days he has worked with departments of the GDVC and the Trade Remedies Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) on cooperation agreements related to preventing evasion of anti-dumping and countervailing duties, as well as the other cooperations between the two authorities.

With the desire to facilitate trade while ensuring commercial and national security, and strengthening the capacity of Customs authorities in detecting and preventing customs offences, and with the enquiring in providing effective solutions and cooperation initiatives, the two customs administrations will succeed in performing tasks, Mr. Edward Thurmond said.

Speaking about cooperation in the near future with support of Mr. Edward Thurmond; the presence of the US Customs Interim Trade Adviser to Vietnam since June and the US Customs’ Deputy Attaché to Vietnam in the coming year, Director General Nguyen Van Can believes in effective and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two administrations for the foreseeable future.
