The 2023 WCO Technology Conference and Exhibition will take place in three days.

At the press conference, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Department Hoang Dinh Trung said that based on the request of the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the approval of the Government, the General Department of Vietnam Customs (GDVC) and the WCO will jointly hold the 2023 WCO Technology Conference and Exhibition from October 10-12 at the National Convention Center (Hanoi, Vietnam).

This is the WCO's largest annual international conference, under the theme “Embracing the Digital Age: Leveraging Technology, Fostering Innovation, and Nurturing the Next Generation of Customs Professionals”.

The Prime Minister decided that from 2022, the National Digital Transformation Day is an annual activity taking place on October 10, so the GDVC has decided to hold the opening day of the conference on October 10.

Deputy Director Hoang Dinh Trung said that Vietnam Customs will plays five major roles in the 2023 WCO Technology Conference and Exhibition.

Accordingly, Vietnam Customs will give presentations at the conference. Director General of Vietnam Customs Nguyen Van Can will participate as a guest at the first plenary session “The Strategy Behind Technology: Leveraging Innovative Solutions to Address Global Trade Challenges”

The session will be attended by senior delegates from international organizations including the WCO Secretary General, Chairperson of the WCO Council, the World Bank’s Senior Expert on Trade Facilitation.

At the session, Director General of Vietnam Customs will discuss specific contents such as the role of technology in sharing knowledge and attracting new generation to the Customs profession; key factors in using technology and areas where certain gaps exist; data governance in customs and international trade and how to build operating models that help collect and exploit data from the entire trade ecosystem based on technological support; different strategic approaches to innovation and technology application in the customs sector to harness the power of technology to address global trade emerging challenges; and how to promote human factors to handle technological issues, ensuring sustainability and good governance in applying technology.

In addition, Vietnam Customs’ representative will present at the conference on “Implementing ASEAN Single Window”, focusing on key contents such as introducing the ASEAN Single Window, the development process and benefits of the ASEAN Single Window compared to the National Single Window; key benefits of current functions of the ASEAN Single Window; methods of resolving issues related to data harmonization and standardization and complying with various national requirements and future implementation plans by the ASEAN Single Window.

Vietnam Customs will also present the topic on “Green Customs for a Sustainable Future: Innovative Solutions for Trade and Border Management”, including contents on green logistics, use of sustainable packaging and circular supply chains; solutions to enhance the effectiveness of controls for environmental compliance, to prevent scrap shipments; and solutions to decrease the carbon footprint of Customs operations.

At the exhibition, Vietnam Customs will arrange exhibition space to introduce the development history, great efforts of Vietnam Customs in customs modernization and IT application, and achievements in customs control and trade facilitation.

Deputy Director Hoang Dinh Trung said that this is the WCO annual and global-scale event. As an active member of the multilateral organization, the host of the event by Vietnam Customs will affirm the pioneering and responsibility of the regulator within the WCO framework. This is also the first time Vietnam Customs will host a large-scale WCO global event with the participation of WCO leaders and leaders of the General Department of Vietnam Customs of other countries, as well as leading technology providers.

In the context that Vietnam Customs is implementing the first phase of the Customs Development Strategy by 2030 with the basic goal of completing digital Customs and smart Customs model, the approach of advanced technology, practices and experience from other countries' customs will help Vietnam Customs catch up with the strong technological development, Trung said.
