According to the assessment of units, the main reason is due to the needs and predilection of consumers for smuggled goods remaining high, profits from smuggling being large and the law provisions having many loopholes for smugglers to abuse.

Smuggled goods are mainly tobacco, sugar, consumer goods, electronics, and used refrigeration products. Especially, in recent times, the illicit transport of gold, foreign currencies and Vietnam currency across the border have appeared in the province. In 2016, the functional forces of An Giang province arrested illicit goods worth over 54.8 billion vnd, up 58% compared to 2015. In particular, the forces arrested nearly 950 tons of sugar, nearly 850,000 packs of cigarettes, 18 kgs of smuggled gold; and illicit transport of more than 900 million vnd and 70,000 Riel.

At this conference, the functional forces said that there were still many difficulties and problems in anti-smuggling and in the handling of violations in recent times such as: the management of perpetrators in areas was not strict; the status of fighting against officers on duty, there were not measures to thoroughly handle cases of smuggled cigarettes andturnaround use of dossiers, and means and tools to support anti-smuggling remain weak and insufficient

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Le Van Nung, Vice Chairman of An Giang province People’s Committee, Head of An Giang Steering 389 stated that anti-smuggling, anti-trade fraud and anti–counterfeit goods in An Giangin 2016 achieved some remarkable results. However, smuggling, trade fraud and counterfeit goods is still complicated, especially with sugar, tobacco, gold and foreign currencies. The functional forces need to consider anti-smuggling as a regular and continuous task, and overcome difficulties for anti-smuggling to reach high results. Mr. Nung also directed the forces to do better with coordination and continue to clean up anti-smuggling staff to minimize smuggling, trade fraud and counterfeit goods in the province.
