The MARD sent an official dispatch to the Border Guard Command (Ministry of National Defense) on August 17, 2021 on coordination on the control of illegal transport of poultry and poultry products across the border.
The official dispatch stated that, according to reports from local authorities, people and media agencies, the illegal trade and transportation of poultry and poultry products across the border into Vietnam has been increasing this year
In nearly eight months, the local authorities culled over 120,000 illegally imported poultry and tens of tons of illegally imported poultry products.
In the first half of August 2021, more than 50,000 breeding poultry and hundreds of kilograms of illegal imported poultry products were destroyed.
In the first seven months of 2021, the avian influenza epidemic occurred in 90 communes in 62 districts of 28 provinces and cities, mainly in Northern border provinces such as Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Lang Son, Quang Ninh, Bac Giang and Thai Nguyen, forcing the culling of over 350,000 poultry (a year-on-year rise of 1.7 times).
The CGC A/H5N8 virus strain was first detected from abroad and caused disease in poultry in border provinces such as Cao Bang and Quang Ninh since June 2021 and then spread to nine other provinces and cities.
According to the MARD, the veterinary authorities have actively taken samples of avian influenza in poultry markets and trading places of border provinces (such as Cao Bang, Lao Cai, Lang Son and Quang Ninh) and found that the positive rate for avian influenza virus A/H5 (which can be transmitted to humans) was 4%, of which influenza virus strain A/H5N6 accounted for 77%.
The risk of avian influenza and other dangerous diseases infecting Vietnam is very high, seriously affecting the development of our country's poultry production (the herd has more than 500 million heads), said the MARD.
