Discovery of carved ivory

VCN – Ivory that was cut into pieces and carved elaborately with a total weight of over 20kg, has been discovered by Customs forces after more than half a year of being unclaimed.

Continuing to implement the guidance of the General Department of Customs relating to the request to inspect shipments at Noi Bai International Airport of the Government Inspectorate, at noon of 3th March 2017, at the ALS warehouse, Anti-smuggling and investigation Department (the General Department of Customs), in coordination with the Hanoi Customs Department, supervised by the working group of the Government Inspectorate inspected the shipment transported from Portugal to Noi Bai International Airport on 21th September 2016.

As a result of the inspection, the Customs force found that the cargo was ivory cut into three pieces and carved elaborately, hidden inside a carton.

Currently, the Customs forces have collaborated with the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources to take samples for assessment in order to handle in accordance to regulations.
