Detecting a shipment of marijuana

The donated shipment was sent from the US to Tan Son Nhat International Airport. Detecting suspicious signs, the Customs authority implemented physical inspection and detected 7 packages of dry marijuana wrapped in plastic bags with a total weight of 1.3kg.
From the beginning of 2018, the trafficking of marijuana from the US to Ho Chi Minh City via aviation (mainly in the form of donated goods) is increasing sharply. The Unit No.6 of Anti-smuggling and Investigation Department coordinated with the Entry Luggage Customs Procedures Team (under Tan Son Nhat International Airport Customs Branch), Anti-drug Enforcement Team (under the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department) and Drug Enforcement Team (under Tan Son Nhat International Airport Customs Branch) have consecutively seized 9 cases of illegal transport of marijuana from the US to Ho Chi Minh city.

The total weight of seized marijuana is over 20kg, an average volume of 2-3/ kg per case. The perpetrators used sophisticated tricks to hide marijuana inside boxes of cakes, candy, coffee, tea bags in personal effects shipments. Thereby, without specialized experience and support by machinery, it is very difficult to detect them.
