Prohibit importing some types of pesticides

VCN – Some type of pesticides will be banned from importing to Vietnam starting from the beginning of 2018.

the active substances 2.4 D and Paraquat could cause a number of diseases in animals and humans.

Accordingly, from 3/1/2018, import prohibition of some pesticides that contain active substances includes, carbendazim, thiophanate-methyl, benomyl into Vietnam.

As of 8/2/2018, to start an import ban of some pesticides containing 2,4 D and paraquat in Vietnam.

Earlier, since 16/10/2017, pesticides containing trichlorfon and carbofuran had also been banned from importing into Vietnam. These are active substances that badly affect human health, animals, ecosystems, and the environment.

For example, the active substances 2.4 D and Paraquat could cause a number of diseases in animals and humans alike: 2.4 D is very harmful to eyes (classification of toxicity 1 for the eye), which may directly affect the white blood cells, thus increasing the risk of lymphoma in humans, long-term use affects the nervous system, endocrine and immune system.

Furthermore, Paraquat can affect the function of the lungs, kidneys, heart, and direct exposure to Paraquat through the skin, upper respiratory tract or orally can lead to poisoning, and even to death without drug antidotes .

In order to ensure effective management, the Plant Protection Department (the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) requested the General Department of Vietnam Customs to closely coordinate in order to control the import of pesticides.
