Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the first half of September, 2024

The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the first half (01-15/9/2024) of September-2024, Vietnam’s total exports of US dollars 14 billion and imports of US dollars 14.55 billion resulted in a trade deficit of nearly US dollars 546 million. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the first half of September was US dollars 28.55 billion, down by 24.9% as compared to the second half of August-2024.

Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods from January to the first half of September of 2024 totaled US dollars 540.72 billion in value terms. It posted an increase of 15.9% (equivalent to USD 74.26 billion) from the same period of previous year. In which, the total merchandise exports value was up by 14.8% to nearly US dollars 279.38 billion and the total merchandise imports value was up by 17.2%, to US dollars 261.34 billion.

In the view of FDI traders, the value of exportation and importation from January to the first half of September of 2024 reached USD 366.69 billion, up by 14.4% as compared to the same period of last year.

Export:

When compared with the second half of August-2024, export of first half of September decreased by 32.5%, mostly as a result of the downturn registered in computer electrical products and part thereof (down by 31.2% - USD 1.17 billion); telephone, mobile phones and part thereof (down by 23.5% - 582 million); machine, tools and euipments (down by 18.4% - USD 494 million)…

Import:

In the first half of September 2024, import decreased by 15.8% when compared with the second half of August, mainly reflecting the down turm in machine, tools equipments (down by 20.5% - USD 467 million); coals (down by 44.7% - USD 175 million).

The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the first half (01-15/8/2024) of August-2024, Vietnam’s total exports of US dollars 16.93 billion and imports of US dollars 16 billion resulted in a trade surplus of nearly US dollars 933 million. 1. According to trade statistics of Vietnam Customs, in July of 2024, a 9.4% upwards in total external merchandise turnover of Vietnam was recorded as compared to the result of June 2024. Exports went up 7.7 %, to USD 36.24 billion and imports increased 11.2%, to USD 33.88 billion in terms of month-on-month basis. As a result, there was a USD 2.36 billion surplus in Vietnam’s trade balance in this month.

The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the second half of July, 2024 the total Vietnam’s exports of US dollars 19.89 billion and imports of nearly US dollars 17.28 billion resulted in a trade surplus of US dollars 2.6 billion. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the second half of July was over US dollars 37.17 billion, up by 13.7% as compared to the first half of July-2024. Furthermore, in the first 7 months of 2024, Vietnam was in trade surplus of USD 14.52 billion.

Highlights 1. According to trade statistics of Vietnam Customs, in May of 2024, a 6.5% upwards in total external merchandise turnover of Vietnam was recorded as compared to the result of April 2024. Exports went up 3.9 %, to USD 32.27 billion and imports increased 9.1%, to USD 32.72 billion in terms of month-on-month basis. As a result, there was a USD 0.45 billion deficit in Vietnam’s trade balance in this month.
