Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the first half of August, 2024

The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the first half (01-15/8/2024) of August-2024, Vietnam’s total exports of US dollars 16.93 billion and imports of US dollars 16 billion resulted in a trade surplus of nearly US dollars 933 million. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the first half of August was US dollars 32.93 billion, down by 11.4% as compared to the second half of July-2024.

Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods from January to the first half of August of 2024 totaled US dollars 473.33 billion in value terms. It posted an increase of 16.9% (equivalent to USD 68.58 billion) from the same period of previous year. In which, the total merchandise exports value was up by 16% to nearly US dollars 244.41 billion and the total merchandise imports value was up by 18%, to US dollars 228.92 billion.

In the view of FDI traders, the value of exportation and importation from January to the first half of August of 2024 reached USD 321.04 billion, up by 15.4% as compared to the same period of last year.

Export:

When compared with the second half of July-2024, export of first half of August decreased by 14.9%, mostly as a result of the downturn registered in telephone, mobile phones and part thereof (down by 26.3% - 791 million); computer electrical products and part thereof (down by 21.4% - USD 562 million); textiles and garments (down by 10.3% - USD 211 million)…

In the first half of August 2024, import decreased by 7.4% when compared with the second half of July, mainly reflecting the downturm in computer electrical products and part thereof (down by 6.1% - USD 307 million); machine, tools equipments (down by 6% - USD 142 million) …

1. According to trade statistics of Vietnam Customs, in July of 2024, a 9.4% upwards in total external merchandise turnover of Vietnam was recorded as compared to the result of June 2024. Exports went up 7.7 %, to USD 36.24 billion and imports increased 11.2%, to USD 33.88 billion in terms of month-on-month basis. Highlights 1. According to trade statistics of Vietnam Customs, in May of 2024, a 6.5% upwards in total external merchandise turnover of Vietnam was recorded as compared to the result of April 2024. According to trade statistics of Vietnam Customs, in April of 2024, a 5.4% downwards in total external merchandise turnover of Vietnam was recorded as compared to the result of March 2024. Exports went down 7.7 %, to USD 31.05 billion and imports decreased 2.9%, to USD 29.99 billion in terms of month-on-month basis. As a result, there was a USD 1.07 billion surplus in Vietnam’s trade balance in this month.
