Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the first half of May, 2019

The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the first half (01-15/5/2019) of May-2019 , Vietnam’s total exports of US dollars 9.69 billion and imports of US dollars 11.54 billion resulted in a trade deficit of nearly US dollars 1.85 billion. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the first half of May was US dollars 21.24 billion, up by 0.5% as compared to the second half of April-2019.

​Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods from January to the first half of May of 2019 totaled US dollars 178.81 billion in value terms. It posted a growth of 8.8% (equivalent to USD 14.45 billion) from the same period of previous year. In which, the total merchandise exports value was up 6.7% to nearly US dollars 88.9 billion and the total merchandise imports value was up 10.9%, to US dollars 89.91 billion.

In the view of FDI traders, the value of exportation and importation in the first half of May reached USD 13.01 billion, down by 0.03% as compared to the second half of April 2019. Therefore, from January to May 15th of 2019, the total value of FDI merchandise trade went up 6% to US dollar 112.98 billion.

Export:

When compared with the second half of April-2019, export of first half of May was down by 9.5%, mostly as a result of the climb-down registered in telephone, mobile phone and part thereof (down by 12.4% - USD 241 million); computer electrical products and part thereof (down by 9% - USD 124 million); machine tools and equipments (down by 7.4% - USD 52 million); wood and wooden products (down by 10.5% - USD 47 million)…

Import:

In the first half of May 2019, import up by 10.7% when compared with the second half of April, mainly reflecting the evolution of computer, electrical products, spare-parts and components thereof (up by 17.8% - USD 336 million); machine, equipment, tools and instruments (up by 15.5% - USD 227 million); fabrics (up by 19.7% - USD 116 million); animals and animal fodders (down by 56.6% - USD 67 million); plastics (down by 18.3% - USD 64 million)…
