Mask smuggling still problem during Covid-19 epidemic

The epidemic has raised the demand for medical masks in and out of the country, leading to prices of this item increasing.According to the General Department of Customs, in February 2020, the Covid-19 situation remains complicated and spreadingnot only in China but also in many other countries aroundthe world, greatly affecting import and export activities and border gates.

“Therefore, smugglers have taken advantage of increasing demand formedical masks. In February, local Customs units such as Lang Son, Lao Cai, Quang Ninh and Cao Bang seized a lot of cases of medical masks without origin and invoices,” said the General Department of Customs

Lao Cai customs department from 3rd to 10th February in coordination with local agencies patrolled and detected five illegal cross-border transportation cases of medical masks. Seized goods were 73,600 masks valued at VND88.32 million

Smugglers often divide shipments to transport overborder crossings. This is a dangerous act when moving from the epidemic area without medical checks, making it difficult for epidemic prevention and control.
