Hai Phong Customs seizes 1.6 tons of smuggled ivory

The ivory is painted black to avoid the control of the enforcement authorities.

On April 1, a representative of Hai Phong Customs Department said that the department had seized a large-scale ivory smuggling case. The smuggled ivories were hidden in cargo container imported at Lach Huyen International Port (Hai Phong).

Notably, in order to outsmart detection by enforcement authorities, smugglers painted black these ivory. This is a new trick discovered for the first time in the Hai Phong port and the whole country.

Earlier, following the direction of the leaders of Hai Phong Customs Department, on March 23, the Customs Enforcement Team (Hai Phong Customs Department) coordinated with Dinh Vu Port Border Gate Customs Branch, Economic Police Department (Hai Phong City Police), Team 1 (Anti-Smuggling and Investigation Department, General Department of Vietnam Customs), Reconnaissance Group No. 1 (Vietnam Coast Guard Command) to inspect the suspected cargo container at Lach Huyen International Port.

The enforcement group detected many pineapple sacks containing 547 pieces of ivory with a total weight of 1,580 kg.

During the investigation process, the Customs force discovered signs that the company named on the bill of lading (located in Lang Son) was a bogus company.

In recent years, Hai Phong Customs Department has been considered the leading department in the whole industry in seizing ivory smuggling cases, including many large-scale cases.

Notably, on March 20, Hai Phong Customs Department seized over 7.6 tons of ivory and ivory products. This is the largest ivory smuggling case seized at Hai Phong port and one of the largest ivory seizures in Vietnam in recent years.
