Challenges from nature

In recent years, extreme weather events such as storms, floods, and prolonged droughts have seriously affected agricultural production, including the animal feed industry.

In 2024, Typhoon Yagi alone caused severe damage to our country's agriculture with nearly 350,000 hectares of rice and crops flooded and damaged; tens of thousands of livestock and poultry died from drowning or lack of food; 36,000 hectares of aquaculture were destroyed, etc.

That is not to mention the damage caused by outbreaks of serious diseases such as: A/H5N1 avian influenza; African swine fever; lumpy skin disease; foot-and-mouth disease, etc., causing hundreds of thousands of livestock and poultry to die and be destroyed.

As an input for the livestock industry, the animal feed industry has also been heavily affected. Although Vietnam was ranked 8th in the world in terms of animal feed output by Alltech's 2024 Agri-Food Outlook Report, actual data shows that the industry is facing a downward trend in output.

Output in 2023 will only reach 20.5 million tons, while output in 2021 will reach 21.9 million tons.

Data from the Department of Animal Husbandry also shows that pig feed output will also decrease from 12.2 million tons in 2021 to 11.4 million tons in 2022 and 11.5 million tons in 2023.

Poultry feed output will decrease more sharply from 10.7 million tons in 2020 to 8.3 million tons in 2023.

In particular, the group of feed for other animals experienced a serious decline of up to 67%, from 0.6 million tons to 0.2 million tons in the period from 2019 to 2023.

The import-export situation is not much better when the export value of animal feed and raw materials in the first 10 months of 2024 is estimated at 850 million USD, down 16%, and imports reached more than 4.02 billion USD, down 5.8% over the same period last year.

In addition, since the beginning of the year, the price of imported raw materials for animal feed production such as wheat, corn, and soybeans has also decreased by 8-14% due to a good harvest, causing animal feed prices to be adjusted down up to 4 times.

Still confident in the future

Despite many challenges, especially the downward trend in 2024, over 57.1% of enterprises participating in Vietnam Report's survey still expressed confidence that the growth prospects in 2025 will be more positive than last year.

The basis for this belief is that the 2025 Livestock and Poultry report of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) said that Vietnam's pork output is expected to increase by 3%, reaching 3.8 million tons in 2025 due to the ability to effectively control African swine fever, creating favorable conditions for expanding the pig herd.

In addition, according to the project on Developing the Animal Feed Processing Industry to 2030, industrial animal feed output is expected to grow and reach 24-25 million tons in 2025 and 30-32 million tons in 2030, meeting at least 70% of the domestic demand for concentrated animal feed.

In particular, from the end of 2023 to now, a series of important projects and policies focusing on improving production capacity, reducing dependence on imports and reducing production costs for the animal feed industry have been implemented, such as: Project "Developing animal feed processing industry to 2030" approved in December 2023; Decree No. 106/2024/ND-CP stipulating support policies and incentives to improve livestock efficiency, including regulations on support policies for organizations, individuals and enterprises in the production, processing, preservation and consumption of domestic raw materials used to produce animal feed, issued in August 2024; reducing import tax on soybean meal as prescribed in Decree No. 144/2024/ND-CP, effective from December 16, 2024;... has created a premise for the confidence of animal feed manufacturing enterprises.

However, enterprises believe that, in order to ensure the balance between production and consumption, helping the animal feed industry develop sustainably, in addition to the efforts of enterprises themselves in researching organic animal feed products that meet biosafety quality standards; finding and diversifying suppliers of raw materials at competitive prices; investing in machinery and automated production lines; implementing sustainable development strategies, protecting the environment;… management agencies need to further improve statistics and market forecasting to help businesses have accurate information on the supply and demand of animal feed as well as the development of livestock and poultry so that businesses can plan effective development strategies, optimizing production costs in the context of increasingly fierce global competition.
