Supporting industry enterprises: Learning standards, understanding opportunities

VCN - Currently, many potential industries have "opened" opportunities for Vietnamese enterprises to enter, such as the semiconductor industry, supporting industries for the aviation sector. However, the higher the added value of the sector, the more it requires enterprises to meet international standards.

During the working trip to attend 79th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Party General Secretary and President To Lam had a meeting with Brendan Nelson, Senior Vice President of Boeing Corporation and President of Boeing Global.

At the meeting, Party General Secretary and President To Lam said that Vietnam encourages Boeing to strengthen cooperation, support human resource training, research and development (R&D) cooperation, technology transfer, and bring Vietnamese partners deeper into the Group's supply chain. In particular, he requested Boeing to soon research and invest in component manufacturing factories, build regional aircraft equipment and machinery maintenance centers associated with major airports in Vietnam...

At the meeting with Tim Hughes, Senior Vice President of SpaceX - the world's leading corporation in providing spacecraft, satellite launch services and satellite communications, Tim Hughes assessed that Vietnam is a very potential market for SpaceX's satellite internet development plan, so the Corporation plans to invest US$1.5 billion in Vietnam in the near future.

Previously, at the end of August 2024, Airbus announced the Wing Emergency Exit Door Project for the A321neo narrow-body aircraft. These exit doors are manufactured by MHI Vietnam - a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Japan in Hanoi.

This project is currently a continuation of Airbus's industrial cooperation in the Vietnamese market such as cooperation with Artus (Meggitt) Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City to supply electromechanical equipment; cooperation with Nikkiso Vietnam in Hanoi to produce composite structures for aircraft and components...

Furthermore, according to experts, the demand for commercial aircraft in the next 20 years is expected to be around 36,000 units. The growth rate of the domestic and international aviation market is also increasing due to the demand for transportation, tourism…

Learn and understand international standards

Great opportunities have opened, but current reality shows that most Vietnamese supporting industry enterprises have not yet fully met the infrastructure and product quality standards in line with international standards to participate in the aviation component manufacturing supply chain.

For example, the “Aerospace Quality Management System” certification – AS9100 is widely applied in the aviation and aerospace industry, including production, maintenance, repair and distribution. This is considered a “passport” for Vietnamese enterprises to participate in the global value chain with multinational corporations. However, AS9100 is based on a similar structure to ISO 9001 and requires strict processes to ensure product safety and reliability, ensure product traceability as well as continuous improvement processes.

According to experts, to be granted AS9100 certification, enterprises need to prepare to establish a quality management system based on internal audit standards, assessed by a third-party certification organization... Therefore, according to Takayuki Ishida, General Director of Vietnam - Japan Consulting - Investment - Supporting Industry Development Co., Ltd. (VI-JA CID), compliance with AS9100 standards allows enterprises to improve their competitiveness in the international market and provide higher quality products and services.

Domestic supporting industry enterprises believe that understanding international certification standards such as AS9100 will help businesses grasp opportunities to have strategies for investing in infrastructure and machinery.

Nguyen Hong Phong, Director of An Mi Tools Co., Ltd. (An Mi Tools) shared that airlines in Europe and the US are very interested in finding manufacturing units in Vietnam to transform their supply chains, so being provided with full overview information about AS9100 Certification will create a great opportunity for Vietnamese supporting industry enterprises.

However, FDI enterprises have more advantages in this regard. From the experience of investing in Vietnam and completing AS9100 certification last August, Onaga Masaru, Chairman of Onaga Vietnam Company shared that achieving AS9100 certification requires investment in time and resources; enterprises also need a thorough preparation process including many stages, from management, selection of raw materials, investment in production lines, to quality management and product export...

Therefore, along with learning and understanding international standards, supporting industry enterprises want to receive support, experience and technology transfer from international partners to “take shortcuts and get ahead”. Understanding this desire, recently, the Hanoi Supporting Industry Enterprises Association (Hansiba), N&G Holdings Group and 10 member enterprises of the aviation industry in Kobe (KAN) - Japan signed a cooperation agreement on the establishment of the Vietnam - Japan Techno Park Complex. Accordingly, Japanese enterprises will cooperate on technology, production processes, especially global manufacturing certification for the aviation and aerospace manufacturing industry.

At the same time, businesses believe that solving the "problem" of standards must go with product output, that is, how Vietnamese businesses can participate in orders from businesses in the value chain, even moving towards working directly with factories of corporations in the field of aviation and aerospace. This requires more effective support from authorities in calling for investment, organizing trade activities, connecting...
