Seafood businesses committed to combating IUU fishing

VCN - According to information from VASEP, under the Action Plan of the program, "seafood businesses are committed to combating Illegal, Unregulated or Unreported (IUU) fishing". From 1st February 2018, the Vietnamese seafood businesses have simultaneously implemented  "commitments to combat IUU fishing” at their offices and processing plants.

Baseafood Company implements “commitments to combat IUU fishing”

Businesses are committed to illegally exploitation, purchase and processing of seafood materials and products, which are exploited from illegal origins, and not in compliance with IUU regulations

This is one action showing the determination by the Vietnamese businesses in combating IUU fishing for protecting the prestige of Vietnamese seafood products as well as for the sustainable development of Vietnam’s fishing industry.

Earlier, in order to stop the situation that fishing boats and fishermen violate and illegally exploit seafood in other country’s territorial waters, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has sent a written request for the handling of fishing boats that are in violation of external territorial waters. This is so Vietnam will be able to exit the EU’s “yellow card”, and to promote the prestige of Vietnam’s seafood brand.

On 28th May 2017, the Prime Minister issued Official Telegraph No. 732 / CD-TTg to direct the People's Committees in coastal provinces and cities to implement drastic measures to prevent, minimize and terminate the situation where Vietnamese fishing boats and fishermen are illegally exploiting seafood in external territorial waters

On 23rd October 2017, the European Commission (EC) gave the "yellow card" warning for illegal, unregulated or unreported fishing (IUU) regulations to Vietnam.

On 13th December 2017, the Prime Minister issued Directive No. 45 / CT-TTg on some urgent tasks and solutions to overcome the EC warning relating to the combat against IUU fishing.

In order to effectively implement Directive No. 45 / CT-TTg and Official Telegraph No. 732 / CD-TTg from the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development requests the Chairman of the People's Committees in coastal provinces and cities, to direct competent authorities in their localities to apply the highest sanctions to the owners and masters of violated boats and to strictly handle brokerage organizations and individuals engaged in taking fishing boats and fishermen into exterior territorial waters for the purposes of illegal fishing.
