Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the second half of October, 2023

The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the second half of October, 2023 the total Vietnam’s exports of US dollars 18.02 billion and imports of nearly US dollars 16.5 billion resulted in a trade surplus of US dollars 1.52 billion. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the second half of October was over US dollars 34.51 billion, up by 27.7% as compared to the first half of October. In 10 months of 2023, Vietnam was in trade surplus of USD 24.59 billion.
Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods in the first 10 months of 2023 totaled US dollars 558.33 billion in value terms, down by 9.6% as compared to the performance of the same period of last year.

In the view of Foreign Direct Invested (FDI) traders, the total value of exportation and importation in the first 10 months of 2023 reached USD 383.95 billion, down by 10.5% in comparison to the same period of 2022.

Export:

As compared to the first half of October-2023, second half of the month increase in the total export value (27% - USD 3.83 billion equally) is reflected by upturn in machine, tools and equipments (up by 39.7% - USD 738 million equally); computer, electrical and part thereof (up by 32% - USD 704 million); footwear (up by 45.4% - USD 322 million); textiles and garments (up by 26.3% - USD 298 million)…

Totally, in the first 10 months of 2023 total export value from Vietnam was USD 291.46 billion, down by 7% as compared to the same period of 2022 (equivalent to USD 22.04 billion in absolute value terms).

Import:

The first half to second half of October widen in the total of import value (28.5%) reflected upturn in computer, electrical and part thereof (up by 27.7% - USD 1.02 billion); machine, tools and equipments (up by 28.8% - USD 447 million equally); crude oil (up by 94.5% - USD 278 million); telephone, mobile phones and part thereof (up by 34.1% - USD 154 million equally).

From January to second half of October-2023, total import value into Vietnam was USD 266.87 billion, went down by 12.2% as compared to the same period of 2022 (equivalent to USD 37.07 billion in absolute value terms).
