Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the first half of April, 2024

The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the first half (01-15/4/2024) of April-2024, Vietnam’s total exports of US dollars 15.03 billion and imports of US dollars 16.1 billion resulted in a trade deficit of US dollars 1.08 billion. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the first half of April was US dollars 31.13 billion, went down by 4.8% as compared to the second half of March-2024.

Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods from January to the first half of April of 2024 totaled US dollars 208.94 billion in value terms. It posted an increase of 15.6% (equivalent to USD 28.23 billion) from the same period of previous year. In which, the total merchandise exports value was up 15.8% to nearly US dollars 107.82 billion and the total merchandise imports value was up 15.4%, to US dollars 101.12 billion.

In the view of FDI traders, the value of exportation and importation from January to the first half of April of 2024 reached USD 141.73 billion, up by 12.8% as compared to the same period of last year.

Export:

When compared with the second half of March-2024, export of first half of April decreased by 14.3%, mostly as a result of the climb-down registered in computer, eletrical products and part there of (down by 27.3% - USD 954 million equally); telephones, mobile phones and parts thereof (down by 19.3% - USD 480 million equally); machine, equipment, tools and instruments (down by 13.7% - USD 274 million equally); irons ans steels (down by 37.9% - USD 189 million); textiles and garments (down by 10.6% - USD 145 million)...

Import:

In the first half of April 2024, import increased by 6.3% when compared with the second half of March, mainly reflecting the evolution of machine, equipment, tools and instruments (up by 10.1% - USD 192 million); wheat (up by 2 times - USD 86 million); irons and steels (up by 17.5% - USD 83 million)…

According to trade statistics of Vietnam Customs, in November of 2024, a 4.1% downwards in total external merchandise turnover of Vietnam was recorded as compared to the result of October 2024.
