Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the first half of August, 2016

VCN- The Vietnam Customs Statistics showed that in the first half (01-15/8/2016) of August-2016, Vietnam’s total exports of US dollars 7.25 billion and imports of US dollars 7.52 billion resulted in a trade surplus of nearly US dollars 268 million. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the first half of August was US dollars 14.78 billion, slightly increased by 0.1% (equal to USD 14 million) as compared to the second half of July-2016.

Vietnam’s trade-in-goods from January to the first half of August of 2016 totaled US dollars 206.76 billion in value terms. It posted a growth of 2.7% (equivalent to USD 5.39 billion) from the same period of prior year. In which, the total merchandise export value was up 5.9% to US dollars 104.4 billion and the total merchandise imports value was down 0.4%, to US dollars 102.36 billion.

In the view of Foreign Direct Invested (FDI) traders, the total value of exportation and importation in the first half of August reached USD 9.55 billion respectively, 0.3% lower than the second half of July. From January to August 15th of 2016, the total merchandise trade value of FDI traders went up 4.1% to US dollar 132.93 billion.

Export:

When compared with the second half of July-2016, export of first half of August decreased by 5.8%, mostly as a result of the decline registered in following products: telephone, mobile phone and part thereof (down by USD 177 million); iron and steel (down by USD 57 million); textile and garments (down by USD 45 million); machine, equipment, tools and instruments (down by USD 41 million); foot-wear (down by USD 40 million)…

However, the following commodities slightly climbed up in export value: still image, video cameras and parts thereof (up by USD 29 million); rice (up by USD 27 million); vegetables (up by USD 19 million)…

Import:

In the first half of August 2016, import increased by 6.5% when compared with second half of July, mainly reflecting the widen of machine, equipment, tools and instruments (up by USD 179 million); plastics (up by USD 55 million); wheat (up by USD 54 million); other base metals (down by USD 43 million)…

Decrease occurred in imports of other means of petroleum products (down by USD 67 million); motor vehicles (down by USD 32 million); telephone, mobile phone and part thereof (down by USD 27 million); animal fodders and animal fodder materials (down by USD 27 million)…

According to trade statistics of Vietnam Customs, in February of 2024, a 26.7% downwards in total external merchandise turnover of Vietnam was recorded as compared to the result of January 2024. The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the second half of January, 2024 the total Vietnam’s exports of US dollars 19.3 billion and imports of nearly US dollars 16.03 billion resulted in a trade surplus of US dollars 3.27 billion. According to trade statistics of Vietnam Customs, in the first month of 2024, a 7.5% upwards in total external merchandise turnover of Vietnam was recorded as compared to the result of December 2023. Exports went up 9.7 %, to USD 34.53 billion and imports increased 5.1%, to USD 30.90 billion in terms of month-on-month basis. As a result, there was a USD 3.63 billion surplus in Vietnam’s trade balance in this month.
