Pepper exports to China hit new record

According to preliminary statistics of the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), in March 2023, Vietnam exported 35,913 tons of pepper, including 32,912 tons of black pepper and 3,001 tons of white pepper. As a result, the total export turnover reached US$ 107.2 million, of which black Pepper at US$93.6 million and white Pepper at US$13.6 million.

Notably, pepper exports to China in March grew by 85.2% to 15,710 tons compared with the previous month. This is the highest monthly export volume, breaking the record of 11,953 tons in April 2020. In addition, March also recorded increased exports to traditional markets such as the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, India, Egypt, France, Russia, Canada, and Spain.

At the end of March, Vietnam shipped 76,727 tons, including 70,222 tons of black pepper and 6,505 tons of white pepper. As a result, the total export turnover reached US$ 235.9 million, including the export turnover of black Pepper at US$205.4 million and white Pepper at US$30.5 million.

The export volume rose by 40.5% or 22,112 tons compared with the same period in 2022. However, the import and export turnover decreased by 7.3% or US$ 18.5 million.

In the first quarter of the year, 25,919 tons of pepper were exported to China, compared with a volume of 2,138 tons in the same period in 2022.

According to VPA, the surge in pepper export because China imported make up for the shortage after 3 years of closure due to Covid-19.

However, exports to the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and India plunges due to the economic crisis.

Some other markets recorded an increase in exports, such as Iran up 461%; Türkiye up 331.3%; Egypt up 218.4%; Senegal up 148.8%.

Germany, the United States, China, the Netherlands are the leading white pepper import markets.

In the first 3 months of 2023, Vietnam exported 18,685 tons of cinnamon with a total export turnover of US$54.8 million, up 45.8% in volume and 13.8% in value over the same period last year.

The main export markets of Vietnamese cinnamon include India at 7,023 tons, up 100.2% and accounting for 37.6% market share; Bangladesh at 2,431 tons, up 127.8%; the U.S. at 2,030 tons, down 17.2%.

Export to other markets also sharply increased as China, Indonesia and Türkiye up 292.1%, 274.9% and 232.1%, respectively.
