The ivory was hidden in hollow wooden blocks, with kaolin powder to cover, and sealed with glue and soil to conceal the ivory from authorities. Then, functional forces hired workers to break open the wooden blocks and discovered the blocks contained ivory.

According to the initial investigation, this shipment of ivory came from the same port in Mozambique where ivory consignments of Dieu Tien Trade and Services Company Limted and other violated companies in HCM City have been detected earlier.

After the goods were transported to Cat Lai port in early September 2016, the owner did not implement Customs procedures. Therefore, the Customs Branch of Saigon port, Zone 1 closely monitored shipments and coordinated relevant forces to conduct physical inspections.

Earlier, at Cat Lai port, Customs officers also discovered and seized nearly 3 tons of ivory and animal scales hidden in hollow wooden blocks. The ivory was transported from African countries to Vietnam.
