Customs detected the 6th ivory smuggling case through Cat Lai port

VCN- On the evening of 28th November 2016, the Team 4 of the Anti-smuggling and Investigation Department under the General Department of Vietnam Customs collaborated with the Customs Control Team (under the HCM City Customs Department) and the Customs Branch of Sai Gon port Zone 1 to conduct physical inspections of 3 containers of imported wood, and discovered ivory.

These containers were in transit from Africa to Vietnam for exporting to Cambodia. The bill of lading showed the African consignor and a Cambodian enterprise as consignee.

Through investigation at Cat Lai port, Team 4 collaborated with relevant forces to inspect and detect more than 200 kg of ivory hidden in wooden blocks.

According to the Deputy team leader of the Team 4, Mr. Mai Van Hoa said on 29th November, Team 4 would continue to conduct physical inspections of the two remaining containers in transit.

This has been the 6th ivory smuggling case detected by Customs officers at Cat Lai port from October 2016 to date. Earlier, in October and November 2016, Customs officers discovered and seized 5 smuggling cases of pangolin scales and ivory of nearly 5 tons at Cat Lai port.

The Customs Branch of Sai Gon port Zone 1 has decided to prosecute two cases on charges of "Smuggling" and "Illegal ivory trafficking".
