The Sixth IP & Innovation Researchers of Asia Conference held in Viet Nam

On 18 and 19 January 2024, Intellectual Property & Innovation Researchers of Asia (IPIRA) Conference held its sixth Conference in Ha Noi, Viet Nam, under the co-organization of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Academy, and the World Trade Organization (WTO). The IPIRA Conference is today one of the premiere annual academic gatherings in Asia, attracting a large number of participants. The sixth IPIRA Conference brought together 250 presenters, chairs, policy makers, officials and participants across Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Africa, and the Americas to meet and discuss their works-in-progress.

The Sixth IP & Innovation Researchers of Asia Conference held in Viet Nam

Since its launch in Kuala Lumpur six years ago, the core objective of the IPIRA Conference is to provide a forum for intellectual exchanges between researchers interested in IP and Innovation related topics in and beyond Asia. In addition, the Conference provides participants with a unique networking and learning opportunity to present their research papers for feedback and dialogue.

The program of the IPIRA Conference includes plenary and parallel sessions featuring research presentations and keynote speakers. This year, the Conference covers varieties of IP and innovation topics such as IP and international trade; cross border enforcement, exhaustion, and transfer of technology; digital copyright and gaming; intellectual property in the online context; intellectual property theory; intellectual property, sustainable development, and a circular economy; intellectual property infringement online, etc.

The Sixth IP & Innovation Researchers of Asia Conference held in Viet Nam

On the opening of the Conference, Mr. Nguyen Van Bay, Deputy Director General, IP Office of Viet Nam delivered his opening keynote on Current IP System of Viet Nam and Policy Options for the Future. In general, Viet Nam’s IP legal system has been built and regularly revised to regulate issues related to intellectual property rights (IPR) protection and enforcement. In the coming time, the country still needs further improvements to encourage the IP creation activities as well as application for IP protection activities, contributing to the national socio-economic development.

At the end of the first day of the Conference, Mr. Hasan Kleib, WIPO Deputy Director General gave the plenary keynote where he focused on WIPO capacity building and knowledge transfer.

The seventh IPIRA Conference will be hosted in Tokyo, Japan in 2025.
