Ho Chi Minh City holds the leading position in exports

Reached more than US$ 42 billion

According to statistics just announced by the General Department of Customs, in December 2023, Ho Chi Minh City's export turnover reached US$ 3.96 billion, leading the country. Compared to the previous month (November 2023), this locality's export turnover increased by more than US$ 300 million.

While Ho Chi Minh City still maintained its growth momentum, the locality following behind, Bac Ninh, had a sharp decrease in turnover. In December 2023, Bac Ninh's export only reached US$ 2.69 billion, down nearly US$ 800 million compared to the previous month.

Compared to other localities still pursuing, Ho Chi Minh City's turnover had a highly outstanding level. For example, compared to the second-ranked locality, Bac Ninh, Ho Chi Minh City's turnover exceeded nearly US$ 1.3 billion.

For the whole year 2023, Ho Chi Minh City continued to lead the country in export turnover with a result of US$ 42.46 billion. However, this result was down more than US$ 5.1 billion compared to 2022.

At the Conference to summarize the work in 2023 and deploy tasks in 2024 (January 12, 2024), the representative of the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City said that 2024 was a breakthrough year in efforts to promote development of industrial production and trade, promote import and export activities towards completing the goals in the 5-year socio-economic development plan (2021-2025).

Specifically, Ho Chi Minh City had set a target of industrial production increasing by 6.5% compared to 2023; export turnover of Ho Chi Minh City enterprises through the city's border gates increased by 10%.

To achieve the above targets, the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City would promote the role of the city's industrial development councils; implement the Ho Chi Minh City Supporting Industry Development Program until 2025; 3 programs to support the development of businesses and mechanical products - automation, rubber - plastic, food processing industry in Ho Chi Minh City in the period of 2020-2030... Thereby focusing resources to support industries and these product groups to develop, enough to spread, lead the market, boost exports and serve as a driving force for the entire industry of Ho Chi Minh City to develop.

9 localities have export turnover of 10 billion USD or more

Regarding the country's export activities in general, in 2023 the total turnover reached US$ 354.67 billion, down 4.6% (equivalent to a decrease of US$ 17.05 billion) compared to 2022.

In 2023, out of 63 provinces and cities nationwide, there were 9 localities achieving a total export turnover of US$ 10 billion.

Besides Ho Chi Minh City, other localities were Bac Ninh, Binh Duong, Hai Phong, Thai Nguyen, Bac Giang, Dong Nai, Hanoi and Phu Tho.

Notably, among the nine key export localities, only Hai Phong and Bac Giang had positive growth last year.

Specifically, Hai Phong reached US$ 26.8 billion, an increase of 7.37% compared to 2022 (equivalent to an increase in turnover of US$ 1.84 billion). This result also helped Hai Phong surpass Thai Nguyen to reach the 4th position in the country's export (after Ho Chi Minh City, Bac Ninh and Binh Duong).

Meanwhile, Bac Giang reached a turnover of US$ 24.5 billion, an increase of 8.3% compared to 2022 (equivalent to an increase in turnover of nearly US$ 1.9 billion). With this result, Bac Giang surpassed Dong Nai to rank 6th in the country in terms of export turnover (after Ho Chi Minh City, Bac Ninh, Binh Duong, Hai Phong and Thai Nguyen).

The export results of the remaining key localities: Bac Ninh reached US$ 39.3 billion (down 12.7%, equivalent to a decrease of US$ 5.7 billion); Binh Duong reached US$ 30.6 billion (down 10.87%, equivalent to a decrease of US$ 3.73 billion); Thai Nguyen reached US$ 25.7 billion (down more than 14%, equivalent to a decrease of US$ 4.2 billion); Dong Nai reached US$ 21.62 billion (down 12.1%, equivalent to a decrease of nearly US$ 3 billion); Hanoi reached US$ 16.65 billion (down more than 3.1%, equivalent to a decrease of more than US$ 500 million); Phu Tho reached US$ 10.58 billion (down 10.34%, equivalent to a decrease of more than US$ 1.2 billion).

​With a total turnover of US$ 238.21 billion, the 9 key localities mentioned above accounted for 67.16% of the country's export turnover last year.

Compared to 2022, the number of provinces and cities with export turnover of US$ 10 billion or more decreases by 1 locality in 2023. The locality dropped from this list was Hai Duong with a turnover of only US$ 9.45 billion in 2023 (2022 reached US$ 10.46 billion).
