Collected more than 3 kg of ivory products transporting to Thailand via Noi Bai airport

The case was discovered in 31/12/2017, at Noi bai International Terminal T2, so the Exit Luggage Customs Procedures Team (Noi Bai International Airport Customs Branch) coordinated with other competent forces including: Aviation security center, Customs Enforcement Unit – Hanoi Customs Department, Unit 1 – Anti-Smuggling and Investigation Department – General Department of Vietnam Customs) to scan and conduct physical inspection of lugguage no. SL 059410 of Quach Van Quynh who took flight no.SL 181 of ThaiLion Air from Noi Bai to Bangkok – Thailand. The competent force detected that inside the luggage it contained suspected goods as ivory products.
The total number of items includes: 4 suspected pieces of ivory and ivory products (1 ring, 4 bracelets of different kinds). The total weight for the 4 pieces was about 2.9 kg; the total weight of one ring and four bracelets was about 0.2 kg.
Immediately, the competent forces sent a sample for verification to the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources. The result showed that the above goods were ivory from African elephants and products made from African elephants.
The coordinating units have agreed to hand over the whole case dossiers and the subject to Unit 1 – Anti-smuggling and Investigation Department - General Department of Vietnam Customs for further investigation. Currently, the violated goods were held in custody in the Noi Bai International Airport Customs Branch warehouse.
