Tan Son Nhat International Airport Customs Branch said that in the night of 15/7/2018, the unit set a specialized project, developed the plan and coordinated with the Environmental Police Department (C49) - Ministry of Public Security, the Mobility Team of Forest protection and fire fighting in Ho Chi Minh City in order to temporarily seize a 41-year-old Vietnamese passenger who entered Vietnam on flight EK392 from Angola to Vietnam when he was illegally transporting 12 rhino horns with a total weight of over 7kg. The total value of exhibits in the free market is estimated at nearly 8 billion VND.
This is the horn of Sumatra Rhino that is very rare and banned from trading, importing and exporting under international law (Cites).
The subject had sophisticatedly hidden those rhino horns in personal luggage such as in milk powder boxes, food, clothes ... in order to escape the competent forces’ notice. However, by applying professional measures and information gathering, Customs authorities have timely detected and prevented the case.
Tan Son Nhat International Airport Customs Branch has handed over the subject and horns to competent authorities for prosecution and expanding investigations to clarify the lines and acts of violation of the subject.
