According to the Industry and Trade Information Center under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam was the ninth largest exporter of ceramics in the world from 2016 to 2020, with an average growth rate of 8.2% per year. The exports of ceramics of Vietnam accounted for 0.9% of the global export value in 2020.
Notably, Vietnam's exports of ceramics still rose 9.9% year-on-year to US$375.5 million despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, this export rate is much lower than main export markets and even regional competitors such as Thailand. Therefore, there is still a lot of room for Vietnam's ceramic industry to exploit.
A representative of the Industry and Trade Information Center said the export potential of ceramics is very large, because the demand for new materials in construction is surging. Ceramic materials are being widely used in construction.
In addition, sanitary wares are indispensable materials in construction. Acid and heat resistant ceramic products are widely used in the chemical industry, metallurgy and other industries.
The main advantages of ceramic materials are high durability and longevity. Raw materials can produce different products meeting demand and the production technology is relatively simple and cheap and the product price is competitive.
To promote and develop the ceramic industry, the representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that it is necessary to build centers for processing and standardizing ceramic raw materials consistent with the ceramic industry. This is the driving force to stabilize production and the premise for the development of high value-added ceramic products.
In addition, it is necessary to plan concentrated ceramic production areas to preserve ceramic production centers and minimize the impact of ceramic production on the environment; and support enterprises to improve production to meet global standards.

Moreover, it is necessary to take advantage of tariff preferences from signed free trade agreements to import modern machinery from developed countries in order to produce ceramic products meeting domestic and foreign demand and improve product value, raise competitiveness and expand market share in the global market.
