Caryedon serratus weevil has not yet appeared in Vietnam

On March 1, 2017, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong signed a decision to temporarily suspend import of groundnuts, cassiatora, cocoa, common beans and tamarindfrom India due to high risk of infection of Caryedon serratus Olivier weevil which is subject to Phytosanitary control in Vietnam. This decision takes effect 60 days from March 01, 2017.

Under the Plant Protection Department, from the beginning of 2017 to now, the phytosanitary authority has discovered 380 tons of India groundnuts which were infected with live serratus weevils.

It is known that the serratus weevil is dangerous and may cause big losses for agricultural products stored in stock and harm groundnuts, cassiatora, cocoa, common beans and tamarind…leading to the loss of export markets for Vietnam agricultural products if the above weevils enter the country

Particularly, the above weevils have not appeared in our country and are subject to Vietnam phytosanitary restriction.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Developmentalso requested the Plant Protection Department to strictly control imported shipments of groundnuts, cassiatora, cocoa, common beans and tamarind from India while the decisions are in effect.

Also, the Plant Protection Department must officially inform the Indian competent authority on phytosanitory o issue remedial measures. Then inspecting and confirming those remedial measures and reporting to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.
