Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the first half of September, 2023

The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the first half (01-15/9/2023) of September-2023, Vietnam’s total exports of US dollars 14.29 billion and imports of US dollars 13.78 billion resulted in a trade surplus of nearly US dollars 222 million. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the first half of September was US dollars 28.07 billion, down by 15.4% as compared to the second half of August-2023.

Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods from January to the first half of September of 2023 totaled US dollars 464.08 billion in value terms. It posted an decrease of 11.9% (equivalent to USD 62.82 billion) from the same period of previous year. In which, the total merchandise exports value was down 8.8% to nearly US dollars 242.04 billion and the total merchandise imports value was down 15.1%, to US dollars 222.05 billion.

In the view of FDI traders, the value of exportation and importation from January to the first half of September of 2023 reached USD 320.01 billion, down by 12.3% as compared to the same period of last year.

Export:

When compared with the second half of August -2023, export of first half of September decreased by 21.6%, mostly as a result of the downturn registered in textiles and garments (down by 36.7% - USD 696 million); computers, electrical products (down by 12.6% - USD 365 million equally); footwear (down by 33.9% - USD 302 million); irons and steels (down by 61.7% - USD 293 millions).

Import:

In the first half of September 2023, import decreased by 6.5% when compared with the second half of August, mainly reflecting the downturn in coal (down by 40.4% - USD 125 millions); machine tools and equipment (down by 6.1% - USD 112 million equally)...
