Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the first half of February, 2017

The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the first half of February-2017, Vietnam’s total exports of US dollars 5.89 billion and imports of US dollars 8.34 billion resulted in a trade deficit of nearly US dollars 2.45 billion. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the first half of February was US dollars 14.22 billion, went up by 10.9% (equal to USD 1.4 billion) as compared to the second half of January-2017.

Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods from January to the first half of February of 2017 totaled US dollars 41.65 billion in value terms. It posted a growth of 25% (equivalent to USD 8.32 billion) from the same period of previous year.

In which, the total merchandise exports value was up 18.5% to nearly US dollars 20.22 billion and the total merchandise imports value was up 31.7% to US dollars 21.43 billion .In the view of FDI traders, the value of exportation and importation in the first half of February reached USD 4.26 billion and USD 5.04 billion respectively. Therefore, from January to February 15th of 2017, the total value of FDI merchandise trade went up 25.2% to US dollar 26.89 billion.

Export:

When compared with the second half of January-2017, export of first half of February decreased by 15.9% mostly as a result of the decline registered in textiles and garments (down by 53.4% - USD 625 million); foot-wear (down by 29.3% - USD 159 million); wood and wooden products (downn by 44.3% - USD 133 million); handbags, purses, suit-cases, head-gear and umbrellas (down by 57.4% -USD 90 million); means of transportation (down by 28% - USD 82 million).

An increase occurred in the following commodities: telephone, mobile phone and part thereof (up by16.6% - USD 166 million); computer, electrical products, spare-parts and components thereof (up by 13.8% - USD 96 million); yarn (up by 44.8% - USD 39 million); petroleum products (up by 87.4% - USD 29 million)…

Import:

In the first half of February 2017, import increased by 43.3% when compared with second half of January, mainly reflecting the widen of computer, electrical products, spare-parts and components thereof (up by 38.7% - USD 387 million); machine, equipment, tools and instruments (up by 35% - USD 352 million); plastics (up by 87.9% - USD 151 million); irons and steels (up by 52.1% - USD 138 million); telephone, mobile phone and part thereof (up by 28.4 - USD 115 million)…

Shrunk occurred in imports of petroleum products (down by 30.9% - USD 94 million); soya bean (down by 69.3% - USD 25 million), corn (down by 19.1% - USD 15 million)…

According to trade statistics of Vietnam Customs, in February of 2024, a 26.7% downwards in total external merchandise turnover of Vietnam was recorded as compared to the result of January 2024. The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the second half of February, 2024 the total Vietnam’s exports of US dollars 14.73 billion and imports of nearly US dollars 13.68 billion resulted in a trade surplus of US dollars 1.05 billion. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the second half of February was over US dollars 28.41 billion, up by 46.7% as compared to the first half of February-2024. Furthermore, in the first 2 months of 2024, Vietnam was in trade surplus of USD 5 billion.

The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the second half of January, 2024 the total Vietnam’s exports of US dollars 19.3 billion and imports of nearly US dollars 16.03 billion resulted in a trade surplus of US dollars 3.27 billion. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the second half of January was over US dollars 35.33 billion, up by 18.6% as compared to the first half of January-2024. Furthermore, in the first month of 2024, Vietnam was in trade surplus of USD 3.63 billion.

According to trade statistics of Vietnam Customs, in the first month of 2024, a 7.5% upwards in total external merchandise turnover of Vietnam was recorded as compared to the result of December 2023. Exports went up 9.7 %, to USD 34.53 billion and imports increased 5.1%, to USD 30.90 billion in terms of month-on-month basis. As a result, there was a USD 3.63 billion surplus in Vietnam’s trade balance in this month.
