The top legislator highlighted the comprehensive achievements the country has recorded under the leadership of the Party and with the strong reform of the law-making body, the drastic actions of the Government and great efforts of the entire political system and people.

She noted the good GDP growth every year, improved social welfare and people’s living condition, progress in economic restructuring and stable security and defence, and the country’s enhanced position in the region and the world.

The NA leader cited statistics that showed in the first nine months of 2018, GDP growth reached 6.98 percent, the highest rise since 2011.

Those achievements have created a new momentum for development and strengthened the people’s trust in the leadership of the Party and State.

Speaking on the agenda of the NA’s 6th session, Chairwoman Ngan said nine bills are expected to be passed, which is another step forward in completing the legal system on institutions of the socialist-oriented market economy, ensuring human rights and citizens’ rights, improving public health care, intensifying corruption prevention and combat, accelerating judicial reform, consolidating national security, defence, and completely renovating education and training, thus meeting the requirements of modernisation, industrialisation and international integration.

Underlining the scheduled ratification of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and relevant documents at this session, Ngan noted that the deal will create an important foundation for Vietnam to continue integrating deeply into the world, and new motivation for national development.

The NA leader also stated that the NA will check the implementation of promises made by Cabinet members, the Chief Judge of the Supreme People’s Court and the head of the Supreme People’s Procuracy in the previous NA session.

Regarding personnel matters, the NA will conduct vote of confidence on officials holding positions elected or approved by the NA, elect the President of the country, and consider and approve the dismissal and appointment of the Minister of Information and Communication.

Ngan emphasised that the vote of confidence will demonstrate the legislature’s assessment of efforts and performance of the officials.

Following the NA Chairwoman’s opening remarks, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc presented a report on national socio-economic situation in 2018 and the socio-economic development plan in 2019, including mid-term assessment of the implementation of the socio-economic development plan for 2016-2020.
