In 2018, finance and real estate enterprises grew sharply

The total after-tax profit of Finance sector increased by 48.7%

According to the statistics of Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX), the number of listed companies that have to announce the fourth quarter of 2018 financial statements was 369 companies (excluding 8 listed companies changing the accounting year, which were VTL, GLT, MHL, IDV, SJ1, KTS, SLS, VDL). By the end of February 2019, 360 companies had announced their financial statements in quarter 4/2018.

According to the results of self-made financial statements in quarter 4/2018 of the listed companies on the HNX, there were 325 enterprises having profitable business results with a total value of 20,946.8 billion VND, up by 9.7% compared to the same period last year. Accumulated 4 quarters of 2018, the total after-tax profit of the listed companies on the HNX reached 19,935.7 billion VND, up by 2,042.3 billion VND (11.4%) compared to 2017.

According to statistics, there were 7/11 sectors having the total profit in 2018 higher than in 2017, of which 3 sectors having a sharp increase in the total profit compared to 2017, including finance sector (an increase of 2,827 billion VND), industry (an increase of 674 billion VND), and real estate (an increase of 256 billion VND).

Notably, in 2017, the finance sector recorded a growth of 54% in business results. As a result, in 2018, this sector continuously maintained its business results with the highest increase when the total profit after tax of finance enterprises increased by 48.7% (from 5,824.9 billion VND in 2017 to 8,659.3 billion VND in 2018). The enterprises having the highest business results in the financial sector in the year were in the banking group, however, there were still some businesses in the securities group having lower business results than in 2017.

The real estate industry had a good growth rate compared to 2017 with the total profit of the industry in 2018 increasing by 35.5% compared to 2017 (from 1,171.5 billion VND in 2017 to 1,586 billion VND in 2018). Companies having strong business results were driven by boosting sales, increasing sales and applying cost-cutting measures. Some sectors having lower total profit in 2018 compared to the previous year were construction (down 1,714 billion VND), oil and gas industries (394 billion VND) ...

The business results of construction industry fell the most

Also according to the accumulated value of 4 quarters of 2018 from the listed companies on the HNX, the number of enterprises with business loss results was 35 companies, up 16.7% compared to the previous year.

However, the total loss in 2018 was -1,011.1 billion VND, down 15.3% compared to 2017, of which, there were 3 out of 11 industries having an increase in total business loss results compared to 2017, namely industry, construction and health sector with the increase of total loss of -137.6 billion VND. There were 7/11 remaining industries having total losses lower or equal to the same period last year, especially there were 4 sectors with no losses in 2018, including warehousing, professional operations, science and technology, administration and support services, information, communications and other activities, agriculture, forestry and fisheries. Some sectors with a sharp decrease in total losses were real estate sector (losses reducing from -161.2 billion in 2017 to -1.7 billion in 2018), oil and gas mining industry (losses reducing from -443.7 billion in 2017 to -322.9 billion in 2018)...

Considering the total after-tax profit of 2018 of the whole market listed on the HNX, construction was the industry having the strongest decrease in business results compared to 2017 when decreasing by 51.1% (from 3,380 billion VND in 2017 to 1,642 billion VND in 2018) and there were 40/68 construction industry enterprises had 2018 business results decreased compared to 2017.

According to the HNX, in addition to the general trend of reducing profit compared to 2017 of construction enterprises, there were also some businesses that have profit increase compared to 2017, due to the growth of construction activities and the increase in profits from financial activities, and the application of a policy of reducing the apparatus, strengthening the management and cost savings of the company.
