Imports of phones and computers fell US$10 billion

According to the General Department of Customs, the country spent US$12.44 billion for imports in the first half of May, up 1.7% (equivalent to US$212 million) from the second half of April 2023.
The increase in import turnover in the first half of May 2023 compared to the second half of April 2023 mainly focus on commodity groups such as: crude oil, rising by 40.3% or US$101 million; computers, electronic products and components, rising 3% or US$87 million; and machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts rising 4.6% or by US$76 million.
Although there was an upward trend in the first half of May, import turnover still saw a sharp decline from the beginning of the year to May 15.
Specifically, from the beginning of the year to the end of May 15, 2023, the country's total import turnover reached US$112.01 billion, down 18% (equivalent to US$24.63 billion) compared to the same period in 2022.
The number of commodity groups decreased sharply such as phones and components decreased by US$ 5.47 billion or 66.5%; computers, electronic products and components fell by US$4.39 billion or 13.4%; machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts by US$2.15 billion or 13.2%.
Thus, the import turnover of two groups of phones and components, computers, electronic products and components, decreased US$9.86 billion.
According to the General Department of Customs, the import turnover of goods of FDI enterprises in the first half of May reached US$8.18 billion, up 4% (equivalent to US$317 million) compared to the second half of April 2023.

By the end of May 15, this sector's imports decreased 18.1% (equivalent to USD 16.14 billion) to US$ 73.09 billion year-on-year, accounting for 65.3% of the country's total import turnover.
