Formulating three scenarioes of lychee consumption

VCN - Facing the complex situation of the Covid-19 pandemic, Bac Giang province has developed three scenarios of consuming and exporting lychee. Specifically, the most favourable scenario is exporting to traditional markets and new markets. The second scenario is in difficulties but still exportable. The third scenario is the most difficult and it cannot be exported.

By 2020, Bac Giang province had more than 28,000 hectares of lychee, with an estimated yield of some 160,000 tonnes, an increase of 10,000 tonnes compared to 2019. In particular, early maturing fruit is 6,000 hectares with output of 45,000 tonnes; main crops of lychee season is 22,100 hectares with output of 115,000 tonnes.

Duong Van Thai, Chairman of Bac Giang People's Committee said that until now, the preparations for exporting lychees to Japan have been completed.

In the context of the Covid 19 pandemic, Bac Giang has developed three scenarios for lychee consumption; at the same time, it is expected that related ministries and agencies will support localities in the export.

Specifically, the most favourable scenario exporting to traditional markets and new markets. The second scenario is difficulties but it still exportable. The third scenario is the most difficult and it cannot be exported.

“Facing the complex situation of Covid-19 pandemic, the province is ready to launch all three scenarios in all situations, take the best initiative to create the most favourable conditions for people to produce and consume products. Besides that, the domestic market is a potential market with about 100 million people. Exploiting the domestic market well, the lychee output of Bac Giang will not be worried about the output,” Thai emphasised.

When leading the task group of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to inspect lychee production and the preparation for exporting to Japan market on April 26, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong assessed that the crop of lychee in this year will be affected by two factors.

The first factor is unfavourable weather which can affect product quality and reduce value. Secondly, the Covid-19 pandemic will disrupt markets, especially export markets.

As the structure of Bac Giang's lychee crop is 30% of the early maturing lychee area along with three scenarios for production and exports, however, the "commander" of agriculture sector said that, the province should continue reviewing and taking a closer look at the scenarioes. In addition, Bac Giang needed to pay attention to plant care and protection techniques to ensure the crops this year will enjoy a good harvest.

“The overarching impact of this year was the Covid-19 pandemic. The ministry has worked with provinces and cities on the consumption of agricultural products, especially Bac Giang province - the locality accounts for 50% of total lychee output of the whole country to formulate groups of positive solutions and actively strive to achieve the goal of good harvest in this year," Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong emphasised.
