Also attending the meeting were WCO Council Chairperson Edward Kieswetter, Deputy Minister of Finance Nguyen Duc Chi, Deputy Chairman of the Government Office Cao Huy, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Hung Viet, Director General of the General Department of Customs Nguyen Van Can and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang appreciated the WCO selecting Vietnam to host the 2023 WCO Technology Conference and Exhibition. The conference is of great significance, demonstrating the WCO's recognition and appreciation for Vietnam Customs and the Vietnam Government.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang said “Since 3 years ago, October 10 has been chosen as Vietnam's Digital Transformation Day. Therefore, the event taking place today is extremely meaningful,"
Also according to the Deputy Prime Minister, Vietnam understands the importance of digital transformation to the country’s development, therefore Vietnam’s Government has always paid attention to this work in all industries and areas, including the Customs area. In trade, Vietnam Customs has two tasks, both control and facilitation. In that context, there is no way to digital transformation. In particular, Vietnam Customs has had positive and basic solutions to ensure the assigned tasks.
Sharing with the Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Kunio Mikuriya thanked Vietnam for its warm welcome to the delegates attending the event.
According to the WCO Secretary General, Vietnam has made very strong developments and trade growth, becoming one of the bright spots of the world economy. In addition, Vietnam is also a country that has rapid development in modern technology. The international community has identified that the Government of Vietnam has a great interest in the application of high technology, especially in Customs.
According to Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, developing human resources to master high technology is extremely important. A variety of technology-related topics will be discussed during the three-day event, hoping to bring a lot of information and practical solutions.
The two sides agreed that the WCO 2023 conference would give customs authorities in countries around the world and more than 200 high-tech enterprises attending the event a great opportunity to exchange and share ideas, thereby promoting private-public partnerships for mutual connection and development.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang emphasized that the recent "slow" trade growth is creating a quiet period after the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang said: "We should take advantage of this period to strengthen the technology system, improve the quality of human resources to be ready to respond better when the world economy recovers "stronger growth momentum in the near future."
