The amount of smuggled ivory includes 569 pieces (with a total weight of 2,052 kg) with various types and sizes, originating from many African countries, such as Angola and Mozambique, etc.
As the Customs Newspaper reported, the amount of smuggled ivory from Mozambique to Cat Lai Port City was transferred with an extremely sophisticated trick, which was detected by the Customs Branch of Sai Gon port, Zone 1 coordinated with the Customs Control Team (the HCM City Department of Customs) and the Department of Crime prevention of smuggling (C74-the Ministry of Public Security) on October 6, 2016.
The name of the enterprise importing the above goods on the declaration was Dieu Tien Trading and Services Ltd. Company (Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City). The imported goods were declared as 2 containers of Cherry wood from Mozambique. The shipment was classified in the “Yellow Channel” (means to examine records).
However, the Customs Branch of Sai Gon port, Zone 1 coordinated with the Customs Control Team (the HCM City Department of Customs) and the Department of Crime Prevention of smuggling (C74 - the Ministry of Public Security) to conduct physical inspections of the entire shipment. Then, they opened 12 blocks of wood and discovered 2 tons of ivory inside.
Shortly after the Standing Office of the National Steering Committee 389 reported the incident, the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Truong Hoa Binh assigned the Ministry of Public Security to coordinate with the General Department of Vietnam Customs for consideration and prosecution of the incident.
