Vietnamese army must stay alert, not rest on its laurels, says top leader

The army must not remain idle amid unexpected developments occurring in political and security matters both regionally and globally, said Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong at the 2020 national military - political conference held in Hanoi on December 7 in Hanoi.

In the speech, General Secretary Trong took the opportunity to praise the Central Military Commission, the Ministry of National Defence, and military Party organisations, for helping the army overcome challenges and fulfil tasks for the year, thereby meeting relevant national development goals.

Moving into 2021, he stated that the regional and global political and security situation looks set to evolve in a complex manner that will have a direct impact on the army’s implementation of key tasks.

Therefore, the Party and State leader requested that the army remain highly vigilant, promote the combat spirit, anticipate situations, and make timely recommendations for both the Party and State in order to create a stable and peaceful environment that is suitable for national development and defence.

The army must also tackle a number of issues in an effective manner, largely relating to the sea, islands, and borders, as well as international relations, so as to defend independence, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the country, General Secretary Trong added.

He also instructed the army to work closely alongside various ministries, authorities, and local people in order to actively participate in search and rescue efforts, swiftly respond to and overcome consequences caused by natural disasters.

The Party and State leader asked the army to renovate its training methods, improve its combat readiness, and build exemplary role models as a means of building a healthy cultural environment within the army.

He reminded the army to be active in the fight against corruption and strive to enhance inspection and supervision in order to strictly maintain the Party and military discipline.
