Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính met with Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, Woo Won-shik in Seoul on Tuesday during his ongoing official visit to the country.

Welcoming Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation on their visit to South Korea – the first visit by a senior Vietnamese leader since the two countries upgraded their relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership – Speaker Woo Won-shik expressed his belief that the visit will further deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries and promote ever firmer bilateral relations under the new framework.

Speaker Woo Won-shik congratulated Việt Nam on its recent socio-economic development achievements, noting that the two countries share many similarities in history, culture and economic development priorities such as digital transformation, green transition and responding to climate change. He also highlighted the complementary aspects of the two countries in terms of their economies and work force.

Speaker Woo Won-shik affirmed that the Korean National Assembly will closely cooperate with the Vietnamese National Assembly to support the governments of both countries in effectively and substantively implementing the Action Programme under the new relationship framework and promoting cooperation in economic security and human resource connectivity.

Expressing his delight at visiting the beautiful and hospitable country of South Korea, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính thanked the National Assembly and the people of South Korea for their warm and thoughtful reception.

Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính congratulated Speaker Woo Won-shik on his recent election as Speaker of the National Assembly of South Korea. He conveyed greetings from Chairman of the National Assembly Trần Thanh Mẫn and senior Vietnamese leaders to Speaker Woo Won-shik, expressing confidence that South Korea will continue to develop and achieve greater success, thereby enhancing its position in the region and the world, with the Korean National Assembly playing an important role.

Both sides assessed that the Việt Nam-Korea relationship has rapidly and substantively developed in many fields since the two countries upgraded their relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, with positive results in trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges.

The two leaders agreed to further strengthen cooperation between the national assemblies of the two countries, promoting the exchange of parliamentary leaders and leaders of specialised committees, enhancing exchanges between parliamentarians and young parliamentarians of the two national assemblies and leveraging the role of friendship parliamentary groups in each country. They also agreed to share experiences in lawmaking and institution building for sustainable development and digital and green transformation.

Additionally, they will continue to leverage the role of the two countries' legislative bodies in supporting the governments in promoting bilateral cooperation, including achieving the goal of reaching $100 billion in trade turnover by 2025.

Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính requested that the national assemblies of the two countries closely cooperate to effectively implement bilateral and multilateral cooperation mechanisms, support policies that enable Vietnamese enterprises to participate more deeply in the global supply chains of Korean enterprises and further open the Korean market to Vietnamese exports, especially agricultural and aquatic products. He also called for enhanced cooperation in digital and green transformations, with South Korea supporting Việt Nam in human resource training in fields such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

Speaker Woo Won-shik asked the Vietnamese government to pay attention to and create favourable conditions for Korean enterprises to do business in Việt Nam. Appreciating the positive contributions of the expatriate labour community in each country, Speaker Woo Won-shik agreed to work with the Vietnamese National Assembly to urge the governments of South Korea and Việt Nam to support and protect the expatriate communities to ensure they live in stability in their host countries.

He also emphasised the importance of promoting cultural exchanges, tourism and people-to-people exchanges to enhance mutual understanding and create a foundation for the sustainable development of bilateral relations.

During the meeting, the two sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern and agreed to coordinate and support each other in international organisations. Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính also conveyed an invitation from Chairman of the National Assembly Trần Thanh Mẫn for Speaker Woo Won-shik to visit Việt Nam soon, which Speaker Woo Won-shik gladly accepted.
