CPI in December 2016 increased by 4.74%

VCN – The Consumer Price Index (CPI) of the whole country in December, 2016 increased 0.23% compared to the previous month, and 4.74% compared to December, 2015.

Medicine and medical services increased at the highest level with 5.3%.

On the morning of 28 December, 2016, the General Department of Statistics held a press conference to announce the socio-economic statistics in 2016.

Accordingly, the CPI in December, 2016 rose by 0.23% compared to the previous month, in which the group of medicine and medical services rose at the highest level with 5.3% (medical services increased by 6.93%) due to the increasing adjustment of the medical service charges as per joint circular No. 37/2015/TTLT-BYT-BTC dated 29 October, 2015 of the Ministry of Health Affairs (affecting the general CPI increasing by 0.27%)

In which, the group of clothes, hats and footwear rose by 0.25% due to the increase of shopping demand in the winter; the group of beverages and cigarettes rose by 0.21%; the group of residential houses and construction materials rose by 0.19% due to the affect of the increase on the gas price in the previous month and high increase of house demand in the last months of 2016, and the group of equipment and household appliances rose by 0.08%.

The remaining groups of goods and services had a decrease in price such as: transportation reduced by 0.89%; restaurants and food services reduced by 0.03%, while food increased by 0.22% and foodstuff reduced by 0.12%, post and telecommunication reduced by 0.03% and culture, entertainment and tourism reduced by 0.02%. Especially, the education group maintained its price compared to the previous month.

The CPI in December, 2016 increased by 4.74% compared to December, 2015, thereby the monthly average CPI increased by 0.4%. The average CPI in 2016 increased by 2.66% compared to 2015. The CPI growth rate in December, 2016 and the average CPI growth rate in 2016 was higher than the average CPI growth rate of the same period in 2015 and the average CPI growth rate in 2015, but still lower than the CPI growth rate in recent years, and was still in the limits of the target of 5%, set by the National Assembly.

The core inflation in December, 2016 increased by 0.11% compared to the previous month and increased by 1.87% compared to the same period in 2015. The average core inflation in 2016 increased by 1.83% compared to the average in 2015

Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam, General Director of the General Department of Statistics acknowledged that: inflation was controlled below 5%, a success of the Government in the context where the socio-economy is facing many difficulties and increasing pressures on inflation when the Ministries adjusted the prices of public services such as the price of medical services and education and training, sharp increase in the price of petrol and oil at the end of 2016, and the occurrence of droughts and floods.
