The Ministry of Health is aiming to produce 14 types of vaccines for the expanded immunization program by 2025.

According to statistics from the Preventive Medicine Department, Ministry of Health, Vietnam has produced 10 vaccines for tuberculosis, measles, rubella, rotavirus, cholera, typhoid, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, measles- Rubella ...

Vietnam got successful eradication of polio in 2000 and has maintained this achievement for over 17 years by implementing polio vaccination and maintaining a high rate of vaccine intake above 90% for years.

Associate Prof. Dr. Duong Thi Hong, Deputy Director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, said that the large polio epidemic in the Northern provinces broke out in 1959-1960, causing 17,000 people to get sick and 500 deaths. Every year, thousands of children suffer from polio sequelae for life, and the incidence rate is over 126 / 100,000 people.

"Thanks to the Soviet Union's vaccine support, in 1961 the rate of polio fell to 3.09/100,000 people. But in order to actively prevent polio, The Minister of Health at that time - Dr. Pham Ngoc Thach, requested to produce a vaccine to prevent this disease.

As early as 1962, the vaccine against polio named Sabin, produced and studied by Vietnam was born. Therefore, the incidence rate of 3/100,000 people remained during the 1960-1970 period and decreased markedly when Vietnam conducted the Expanded Program on Immunization in 1985.

"Since 1990, the proportion of children under 1 year old who have been given enough of the three doses of polio vaccine has been maintained at over 90%, and this was a premise for Vietnam to get successful eradication of polio in 2000," Ms. Hong shared.

The oral cholera vaccine is also a vaccine successfully developed by Vietnam from the technology transferred by Sweden. In 2000-2001, Vietnam continued to transfer this technology to the Korea Vaccine Institute for free. From then, an Indian company had the copyright to produce oral cholera vaccine for export around the world.

In addition to polio, cholera, Japanese encephalitis is also a vaccine that Vietnam successfully developed and so far there are more than 70 million doses of this vaccine that are shipped with low cost. Vietnam has also exported more than 5.3 million doses of Japanese encephalitis vaccine to India.

With the above achievements, in 2015, Vietnam was recognized by the World Health Organization to meet the NRA standards (Vietnam Vaccine Management Agency) on the national vaccine monitoring and management system. This is one of the important criteria to qualify for vaccine export. At that time, Vietnam was rated as one of 45 countries with a vaccine industry and one of 39 countries to achieve the NRA.

Recently, Vietnam has also successfully produced the complex Hib vaccine to protect children from respiratory diseases, Hib infection of meningitis. This is considered one of the most complex vaccines, through many stages of refining. Currently this vaccine has been selected as one of the products in the National Product Development Program until 2020.

In 2018, the combined MR (Measles-Rubella) vaccine produced by Vietnam Center for research and Production of Vaccines and Biologicals (POLYVAC) was used nationwide for children aged 18-24 months in the expanded immunization, replacing the imported Measles-Rubella vaccine.

Recently, in 5/2018, the research topic of producing the second-generation flu vaccine in the split form with cheap commercial prices, which is only 1/2 - 2/3 compared to imported vaccines, has been approved by the Council of the Ministry of Health with excellent results. Currently, the registration documents for circulation of the vaccine are being reviewed by the Drug Administration of Vietnam and hope that the vaccine will be available soon

Not to mention, the Quinvaxem 5 in 1 vaccine in our Expanded Program on Immunization was suddenly stopped because Korea stopped producing it. In the short term, the Indian vaccine ComBE Five is used to replace the Quinvaxem. However, recently, a representative from the Ministry of Health said that, in the next 2 years, Vietnam will produce 5-in-1 vaccines (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis b and Hib vaccine) by ourselves for using in the Expanded Program on Immunization.

In addition, in 2018 and 2019, 3 more types of made-in-Vietnam vaccines for seasonal flu, Japanese encephalitis and inactivated polio will be put into use. These vaccines are in the process of preparing for application for circulation licenses.

This success will make an important contribution to the implementation of the Government's goal that by 2020, Vietnam will produce 12 vaccines and by 2030 we will produce 14 types for using in the Expanded Program on Immunization.

The National Product Development Program by 2020 was approved by the Prime Minister with the aim of forming and developing Vietnamese products with advanced and competitive technologies on novelty, quality and price based on the implementation of advantages of human resources, natural resources and natural conditions of the country.

The National Product Development Program has approved 11 tasks, focusing on vaccine research and development. Accordingly, many projects on the production of vaccines for disease prevention have been approved.

In 2013, the Ministry of Health approved the National Product Development Framework Project named "Vaccine for human disease prevention" including 12 science and technology projects and 7 investment projects. In 2017-2018, the Ministry continued to approve additional 3 science and technology projects into the framework scheme. So far, there are 22 projects; including 15 science and technology projects (9 projects are being implemented) and 7 investment ones (no implementation budget).

Among the 9 (with 11 tasks) science and technology projects that are being implemented, many ones have achieved initial results such as: Project "Research and development of Japanese encephalitis vaccine products on Vero cell", "Research and development of Hib conjugate vaccine product", "Research and development of inactivated polio vaccine products", "Research and development of seasonal flu vaccines"...
