Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the second half of July, 2023

The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the second half of July, 2023 the total Vietnam’s exports of US dollars 16.18 billion and imports of nearly US dollars 13.5 billion resulted in a trade surplus of US dollars 2.68 billion. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the second half of July was US dollars 29.69 billion, up by 9.2% as compared to the first half of July-2023. Furthermore, in the first 7 months of 2023, Vietnam was in trade surplus of USD 16.48 billion.
Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods in the first 7 months of 2023 totaled US dollars 374.36 billion in value terms, climbed down by 13.8% as compared to the performance of the same period of last year.

In the view of Foreign Direct Invested (FDI) traders, the total value of exportation and importation in the first 7 months of 2023 reached USD 258.05 billion, down by 13.8% in comparison to the same period of 2022.

Export:

As compared to the first half of July-2023, second half of the month increase in the total export value (17.2% - USD 2.37 billion equally) is reflected by upturn in telephone, mobile phones and part thereof (up by 70.6% - USD 1.16 billion); machine tool equipments (up by 22.1% - 351 million equally); textiles and garments (up by 10.9% - USD 169 million equally); irons and steels (up by 38.4% - USD 118 million).

Totally, in the first 7 months of 2023 total export value from Vietnam was USD 195.42 billion, climbed down by 10.3% as compared to the same period of 2022 (equivalent to USD 22.5 billion in absolute value terms).

Import:

The first half to second half of July widen in the total of import value (0.9%) reflected upturn in telephone, mobile phones and part thereof (up by 46% - USD 132 million); machine tool equipments (up by 8.2% - USD 139 million equally); corn (up by 139% - USD 72.6 million); irons and steels (up by 17% - USD 66 million)...

From January to second half of July-2023, total import value into Vietnam was USD 178.94 billion, went down by 17.4% as compared to the same period of 2022 (equivalent to USD 37.64 billion in absolute value terms).
