Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the second half of December, 2016

Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the second half of December was US dollars 17.56 billion, up by 9.2% as compared to the first half of December-2016 (equivalent to USD 1.47 billion).

Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods in 12 months of 2016 totaled US dollars 350.74 billion in value terms which expanded by 7.1% as compared to the performance of same period last year. In which, the total merchandise exports valued US dollars 176.63 billion, moved up by 9% and the total merchandise imports valued US dollars 174.11 billion, went up by 5.2%. Therefore, Vietnam was in trade surplus of over USD 2.52 billion in that period.

In the view of Foreign Direct Invested (FDI) traders, the total value of exportation and importation in 2016 reached USD 226.21 billion, up by 8.9% in comparison to 2015.

Export:

As compared to the first half of December-2016, the second half of the month increase in the total export value (9,4% - USD 741 million equally) is reflected by upturn in textiles and garments (up by 24.1% - USD 247 million); means of transportation (up by 35.4% - USD 86 million); iron and steel (up by 103.3% - USD 79 million); crude oil (up by 1,2 times – USD 75 million); fishery products (up by 23.3% - USD 68 million)…

It was also showed by Vietnam Customs Statistics that export value of some commodities shrunk in the second half of December, which included: telephone, mobile phones and part thereof (down by 18.3% - USD 270 million); coffee (down by 10.6% - USD 19 million); coal (down by 52.4% - USD 13 million)…​

Import:

The first half to second half of December increase in the total of import value (8.9%) reflected upturn in: petroleum products (up by 113.6% - USD 242 million); machine, equipment, tools and instrument (up by 15.4% - USD 220 million); cashew nut (up by 114.5% - USD 64 million); coal (up by 113.9% - USD 40 million)…

Shrunk occurred in importation of some commodities such as: fabrics (down by 4.4% - USD 21 million); textile, leather and foot-wear materials and auxilaries (down by 8.9% - USD 20 million); milk and milk products (down by 39% - USD 20 million)…
