Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the first half of September, 2018

The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the first half (01-15/9/2018) of September-2018, Vietnam’s total exports of US dollars 10.22 billion and imports of US dollars 9.34 billion resulted in a trade deficit of nearly US dollars 878 million. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the first half of September was US dollars 19.56 billion, down by 19.1% as compared to the second half of August-2018.

Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods from January to the first half of September of 2018 totaled US dollars 331.57 billion in value terms. It posted a growth of 14% (equivalent to USD 40.64 billion) from the same period of previous year.

In the view of FDI traders, the total value of exportation and importation in the first half of September reached USD 13.43 billion, down by 18.7% (equivalent to USD 3.08 billion) in comparison to the second half of August, 2018. Up to the September, 15th 2018, the total merchandise trade value of FDI traders was USD 216.43 billion, 14.3% higher than the performance of the same period of 2017.

When compared with the second half of August-2018, export of first half of September decreased by 23.3%, mostly as a result of the decline registered in telephone, mobile phones and parts thereof (down by 13.6% - USD 419 million equally); textiles and garments (down by 23.8% - USD 415 million equally); computer, electrical products (down by 19.9% - USD 326 million equally); machine tools and equipments (down by 31.7% - USD 290 million); footwear (down by 23.6% - USD 170 million equally); irons and steels (down by 51.8% - USD 155 million equally); fishery products (down by 28.6% - USD 139 million)...

In the first half of September 2018, import decrease by 14% when compared with second half of August, mainly reflecting the shrunk of crude oil (down by 398 million USD); computer, electrical products (down by 18% - USD 384 million equally); petroleum products (down by 42.4% - USD 124 million); telephone, mobile phones and parts thereof (down by 10.9% - USD 109 million equally); machine tools and equipments (down by 5.4% - USD 77 million equally)..

According to trade statistics of Vietnam Customs, in November of 2024, a 4.1% downwards in total external merchandise turnover of Vietnam was recorded as compared to the result of October 2024.
